Smorgasbord Health Column – Influenza – The herb Goldenseal.

Cold and flu time is creeping up on many of us…If you are looking for natural remedies then this post offers some good advice 🙂

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

In the last few health column posts I have covered the upcoming influenza season with news of a mega-vaccine and how to boost the immune system to prevent infection. I also mentioned the preventative and therapeutic properties of Echinacea and  in this post I want to follow up with another herb with similar properties but is not quite as popular.

You can find these posts in theHealth Directory

Echinacea is an herb that might help prevent infections from colds and also help alleviate the symptoms if you actually caught one. Goldenseal has similar properties and also has a number of other reported medicinal properties including being anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal as well as being full of nutrients. It contains Vitamins A, C and E, B-complex, calcium, iron and manganese.

A word of warning about Goldenseal, it is a uterine stimulant which means that you should not take if you are…

Healthy Eating …No more Diets…

sundried-tomatoes-massamum-curry

Good morning from sunny Thailand although there could be a black cloud on the horizon when I jump on the scales today…Maybe if I just gently step on they will be kind…

Wow, but that was the few days that was in Phuket and I was true to my word I did not write a thing in my food diary…And did I enjoy my food??? Oh Yes…

So take a pew and I will tell all…

lola roxy and sophia at shipwreck

It started with two flight delays and no I didn’t partake no alcohol just H2O( water) …I have an unwritten rule that I don’t drink when flying…It doesn’t help with the jet lag or the swollen ankles so over the years I have learnt…and of course I make up for it when I land so this lady doesn ‘t miss out…

On arrival ..late and my friend had eaten…so I opted for my favourite Grapow Moo washed down with 2 glasses of wine…

grapow- krapow-egg-pork

After a catch up we eventually went to sleep …

Woken by the sounds of cups clinking…we had a cuppa( tea) on the balcony then showered and took a walk…Oh… it hasn’t changed all the ticket touts selling their wares but we wanted breakfast so we opted for a buffet breakfast at the nearest beach hotel… It was …not a joy really…aimed at the tourist market…nothing to write home about …

So I opted for a Thai omelette which is an omelette with fish sauce and chillies and she added cheese before I could stop her..but it was ok…

Time for a walk we strolled along the beach and then we decided to take a walk to meet our other friend…At this point I will just say I love my friend Barbara aka Sofia..her sense of direction…She hasn’t a clue…

bangtao-beach-Phuket

A nice walk though and I chatted to a few people along the way…It  was thirsty work walking  so first drink of the day was a lovely mango smoothie…and  Sofia had a banana and pandan smoothie..

mango-smoothie

Refreshed… we set off…heading for Mini Golf which was our first watering hole… a ginger and lemongrass mojito minus the rum..a mocktail they call it…

mocktail-mojito

Lovely chicken satay to eat… I just love the Thai peanut dip and a lovely cucumber and chilli one …

Lola, Roxy and Sofia are now in the house!

Just in case you were wondering and I think it must be an American thing…For a while when we had our restaurant I heard the staff talking about Sofia and in the end said no her name is Barbara but apparently not or not when she is out…So we became Sofia, Lola, Roxy and Ethel… Who unforunately couldn’t join us…In case you are wondering I am Roxy…

Next stop...A reunion with our Thai friend Iddy who happens to work @ A wine bar…We had to drop by and say hello…

olives-crostini

The sun dried tomatoes from Italy were awesome as were the olives …Two bottles of wine later we headed for Ann’s Kitchen where I had the best Penang Red Curry I have had for a while it was lovely…

penang-Thai-curry

Next stop …This little bar we know…. a few G & T’s later and after some great music and a little boogie we retired to bed…

gin tonic

I think by now you understand why I am not keeping a food diary… Well I am sort of though but in my head…

Up bright and early it was a banana for starters…Sofia had the muffins…I needed to top up my potassium…I just knew it was going to be one of those days…

Patong here we come…I love that drive the scenery is awesome…

First stop ..well we all had a couple of little stops to make so the Irish Times was our meeting point…It was now 11am but I am sure it was 5pm somewhere in the world so those couple of  glasses of wine were welcome as we chatted and caught up…

On to Absolute for lunch and I had a lovely Massaman Curry very nice and my drink as I knew the next stop was Ship wreck ( our favourite) bar in Patong…

massamum curry at Absolute 1

I had a Komucha…I am not snitching here but my two friends …Sophia and Lola ..they were on the hard stuff…Me? I  paced myself…

Ship wreck and I could have been wrecked and quite early in the day…so I was again on the water…

lola roxy and sophia at shipwreck

Time for a sundowner and nowhere better than one of my favourite Beach side restaurants …The wine flowed as did the prawns, garlic and some lovely very thin sort of bread with goats cheese and things…

beach cuisine girls night out

Time for a tune or two accompanied by some G & T’s…

And now to sleep….

sleeping-1353562_1280

Breakfast at Waya’s was fruit and lovely cinnamon bread and fresh coconut water….

A last stop at the wine bar and we headed for the airport…..

airplane-161163_1280

1lb on…That is a minor miracle….So I am happy with that and back on the food diary

When I say no to diets I mean sensible healthy eating BUT sometimes to take time out and enjoy is ok..So no beating yourself up I don’t..Just get back on it … 1 lb on considering what I ate and drank is really good…But we did some walking and I gave myself a little break at some watering holes and stayed on the H2o aka water…You must keep hydrated in the sun and it worked …I enjoyed some great food( guilt free) and cocktails and a few bottles of wine but ..Back on it now as Christmas is coming and the only thing getting fat will be the goose…WON’T IT?????

How do you cope with a holiday and breaks??? Any tips to share???

Please let us know in comments…

About Carol:

Enjoying life in The Land Of Smiles I am having so much fun researching, finding new, authentic recipes both Thai and International to share with you. New recipes gleaned from those who I have met on my travels or are just passing through and stopped for a while. I hope you enjoy them.

I love shopping at the local markets, finding fresh, natural ingredients, new strange fruits and vegetable ones I have never seen or cooked with. I am generally the only European person and attract much attention and I love to try what I am offered and when I smile and say Aroy or Saab as it is here in the north I am met with much smiling.

Some of my recipes may not be in line with traditional ingredients and methods of cooking but are recipes I know and have become to love and maybe if you dare to try you will too. You will always get more than just a recipe from me as I love to research and find out what other properties the ingredients I use have to improve our health and wellbeing.

Exciting for me hence the title of my blog, Retired No One Told Me! I am having a wonderful ride and don’t want to get off, so if you wish to follow me on my adventures, then welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride also and if it encourages you to take a step into the unknown or untried, you know you want to…….Then, I will be happy!

Healthy Eating…How to lose weight and eat the foods you love! A challenge!

No more tofu

Here we are again and my posts about Obesity around the world and the causes has finished not quite on the note I hoped and was it an eye-opener? …If I am honest…NO!… And Yes…How does that make me feel? It makes me very sad that the greed of big manufacturers, businesses and governments knows no bounds…

It makes me wonder why…Yes, why? We let them do this… I think that we are complacent, that if it doesn’t directly affect us…We do nothing…

Then smack, Bang, Wallop… How did that happen???

We all need to wake up…smell the coffee… Question what we don’t understand whether it affects us or not because one day it will…If it doesn’t already it will affect our children…Our grandchildren…Future generations… someone’s child, someone’s mum, someone’s dad…Just someone!

What can we do???

We can take charge we can be in charge of our own bodies our own destinies and yes some things we cannot change but maybe if we change our eating habits we can lessen the effects of poor choices… of a bad diet…

Are YOU willing to try???

No-diets-No-excuses

Who do you cheat??? Yourself!

Let’s do this for ourselves our families and Let’s kick these big companies into touch…Lets cook from scratch…Let’s check where our food comes from…Let’s try… Let’s say NO! To fast food…Let’s say NO! To processed food…

I want you to tell me and everyone who reads this what you are doing…Join in…Do a guest post…I dare you…I invite you…

What works for you? What has made your condition A) Go away B) Ease your symptoms..??

This is my challenge to YOU…

What am I going to do? I am going to try Tofu…Have a couple of meat-free days a week…I hope some of you will send me some of your tried and tested recipes I can post on here…Give me your opinions on Tofu…I have none…I don’t eat it…I don’t cook with it…

Tofu 3

But I have bought some and it sits in my fridge and I am going to try it… I am meeting opposition…The men…They love their meat BUT they have promised to try it…Will they be biased? I am going to make this dish as tasty as I can …We will see…Will I like it will they like it???

What are you going to do?

My parting words… I love food…I love good food… I believe you can eat what you like and be healthy…I believe in moderation…I bet you were wondering when my favourite word was going to creep in…haha

I love walking…I walk a lot…I don’t like jumping about like a lunatic to music or someone shouting… We all know we should exercise… Find your favourite exercise it doesn’t have to be costly gyms unless that is your thing… But it does have to be enjoyable…You have to love what you do and eat… Then you will be healthy…

Until next week and Tofu xxx

If you have found this a thought-provoking read on the effects of  following a western diet please share xxx

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – The Food and Cookery Column with Carol Taylor – #Horseradish

It is cookery column time yet again @ Sally’s I hope you enjoy the lovely horseradish and the recipes…Have a lovely day xx

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

Welcome to Wednesdays Cookery column on Smorgasbord and thank you for all your kind comments on Peppercorns I am now trying to get hold of the Tasmanian peppercorn called Pepper berries which are said to be 10 times hotter than the black peppercorn…I saw these last week on MKR which I love watching… anyway I waffle and this week I am showcasing the Horseradish root which I love and also which I can get here…Happy Days!

The horseradish is one of my favourites it goes with so much and really elevates the flavour and although I don’t eat very much beef at all…Beef and horseradish are one of my favourite combinations.

The horseradish is part of the brassicaceae family alongside wasabi, broccoli, mustard and cabbages. Closer to wasabi and mustard when the horseradish root is sliced the enzymes which are released when the plant cells break down produce sinigrin which…

Healthy Eating…How to lose weight and eat the foods you love !

Hello, there and welcome back to Carol’s boot camp…lol…As you know I do not believe in diets I believe in healthy eating and moderation…Also called…

board-1848736_1920

I have however over the years subjected this bod to many strange diets none of which worked for any length of time and the only thing which got slimmer through these diets was my bank balance …

At the end of this tongue in cheek look at various diets… I will be giving you a recipe for a Protein Drink… Protein drinks in my book…I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole… I am the most unbelieving person on this earth when celebrity’s and manufacturers tell me that their product is the best thing since sliced bread… Yes and look how good sliced bread is for you…NOT!

The first diet gimmick on my list is:-

Cream…No girls, not the cream you put on your strawberries…

cream-1464295_1920

NO..you rub it in where you wish to lose weight or fat from, sit back after you have wrapped yourself in plastic wrap and watch it miraculously disappear and at $24.99  an 8 oz pot…HaHa… One says 300 recommendations…pfff the only thing slimming down is your bank balance…sucker!

7-minute workouts…

snail-48182_1280

Seriously with all those repeats, the reality is at least 20  minutes or longer unless of course, you are an excise ninja who can move at the speed of light…

The What!

A pill that you swallow which turns into a balloon which a doctor then inflates in your stomach so you need less food…so if you are such a pig and ignore the full signs it gets squashed and you get the scenario where the said balloon explodes…

Come on have you not heard of Mr and Mrs Will Power who live in moderation avenue???

Diet Pills.

pills-3114365_1920

The saying is we eat with our eyes first… You must have some imagination!!!

No Carbs!...That works… we starve our muscles, lose water and feel crap… When all we have to do is eat Good Carbs…Sweet potatoes and whole grains.

Other elimination diets!

lemon-1187658_1920

Too good to be true… Cookie Diet and Candy Diet…Whatever next???

I now rest my case…do any of you know any diets that really work where you can eat what you like ..when you like …That is free and all it requires is a little willpower and moderation.

Now for those who exercise quite hard and take or think you should take protein drinks then how about making your own?

I know many people who exercise who take these… So I thought I would do a little research and make my own… Cost wise it is a no-brainer against the cost of some most Protein powders I made one today and it was nice…It tasted good..my son was my guinea pig/taste tester and has been a protein drink customer in the past and it got the thumbs up from him.

The protein shake is 3/4 cup of liquid and 1/3 cup of your main protein…

Liquids:-

Almond milk, Coconut milk or water or Soya milk… It important to get the right balance not what liquid you choose.

Proteins:-

Greek yoghurt, Silken tofu, nut butter i.e raw cashews ( which) require soaking overnight to soften.

Extra proteins:-

Chia seeds, hemp hearts, ground flax or whole oats.

Today I made a Raspberry Protein shake and for an extra boost could have used chia seeds.

Raspberry Protein shake.

Raspberry Protein Shake

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of coconut water

1/3 cup of greek yoghurt

1/2 cup of frozen raspberries

1/2 medium beetroot(raw) peeled and diced.

1 tbsp honey ( optional)

1 tbsp chia seeds ( optional)

Let’s, Blitz!

Measure all the ingredients into your blender and blitz away… The colour was amazing a beautiful colour and it tasted very nice not too sweet and I did add honey.  Having never had a protein drink I do not know what they taste like although I have listened to others who say well they don’t taste great but I drink them anyway…Really!

I like to drink something which tastes pleasant.

Next week I am going to test a Tropical Protein shake and I might give you a typical days menu for me (what ) I eat in a day and still lose or maintain my weight.

Until next week ..just have fun, enjoy your food and moderation…

What have I been drinking this week?... My first drink of the day…A small glass of hot water, with a tbsp of apple cider vinegar, 2 tsp raw honey and about a tsp of freshly grated ginger…

Apple cider vinegar with honey and ginger

I do alternate my drinks every so often but I also think this has helped curb my sweet tooth…Oh yes…This girl used to love her cakes and sweets…I still do but I don’t crave them anymore and if I do see something and think I fancy that then I may buy it but can just have a piece or one sweet and really enjoy it…but truly I couldn’t eat the whole packet like I used too… Is it my age? Has cutting out sweet, sugary drinks and caffeine curbed my sweet tooth???

Over to you...

What changes have you made to your drinks??? Tell me in comments I would love to know …

Before I turn to what I snack on as promised…

It’s Pancake day today! Shrove Tuesday and tomorrow is the start of Lent.

https://blondieaka.wordpress.com/2018/02/10/shrove-tuesday-aka-pancake-day-mardi-gras-or-fat-tuesday/

I am having a pancake…complete with Lime and sugar( i Can’t) get lemons… I am going to enjoy it! I am not going to feel guilty and neither should you…

We cannot go through life avoiding all these days of the year which tempt us with …yes unhealthy goodies…Can we???

board-1848736_1920

MODERATION…Simples!

Enjoy!

My snacks.

Honestly, I don’t snack a lot but when I do… I have a fridge full of pickles, Pickled Jalapenos and I eat a small piece of feta cheese and a couple of cherry tomatoes.

Pickled cabbage ( Pak dong), Pickled onions, pickled cucumber and Pickled Garlic…occassionally I pickle watermelon rinds and pickled eggs. All little nibbles to enjoy!

https://blondieaka.wordpress.com/2017/07/26/healthy-eating-just-pickled/

I might make a small bowl of fresh salsa or guacamole( occasionally) and here is where the moderation kicks in IF I eat Doritos ( moderation)

But make your own healthy chips for dips…

Salt and Vinegar Kale chips.

kale-2317181_1920

Just tear leaves from a bunch of kale then toss in 2 tbsp of Olive oil, I tbsp of Apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp of sea salt and 1 tsp of maple syrup.

Spread on a baking tray and bake at 180 for about 10 minutes turning after 5 mins and bake until crisp and dry. Cool down and enjoy either on their own or with some fresh salsa…

Vary kale chips by adding some garlic…Play with your flavours get the kids to help…

Beetroot and rosemary chips

Peel a medium beetroot and thinly slice with a mandolin if you have one or use a vegetable peeler. Arrange on a baking tray and sprinkle with a little Olive oil. Bake 180 degrees for about 20 minutes until the edges dry out. Sprinkle with a tsp of chopped rosemary and bake for a further 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack they will crisp as they cool down.

apple-3100673_1920

You can also make healthy chips from apple, banana, pineapple, pears and papaya.

Do you make your own healthy chips? If so share your recipe with us in comments or PM  me and I will add it to my blog…

I hope you are enjoying the insight into what I eat …Feel free to add your tips…Let’s all share our knowledge and get healthier…Let’s protect our bodies from ageing and preventable diseases…We won’t stop everything but we can help ourselves as much as we can by being aware, by applying moderation and no excuses…

Until next Tuesday enjoy your food and laugh a lot… and share any good practices you have…we all want to know…I want to know…I am not perfect I just try to do what I can to preserve this old body of mine…
